Junior Tennis

Junior Tennis FAQs

Questions parents commonly ask before booking their child into a tennis program.

What age can my child start tennis?

Children can start tennis from preschool age through our early years and modified tennis pathways. Younger children focus on movement, coordination, tracking, catching, throwing and simple racquet skills before progressing into more structured tennis.

Our junior pathway includes Matchpoint Minis, Blue, Red, Orange, Green and Yellow Ball programs.

How do I know which level my child should join?

We place children based on age, confidence, skill level and coach recommendation. As a guide, younger beginners usually start in Blue or Red Ball, while older or more experienced players may be better suited to Orange, Green or Yellow Ball.

The best place to start is our Find My Child’s Level page.

Can my child join during the term?

In many cases, yes. If there is space in a suitable class, children can usually join partway through the term. Our team can help check the best available option based on your child’s age, level and preferred venue.

Please note that students at The Lakes College are generally unable to join partway through the term, as these classes operate on a set term structure.

Does my child need their own racquet?

A racquet is helpful, but new players do not need to have everything perfect before starting. Our team can help recommend the right size racquet based on your child’s age and height.

First-time Hot Shots players may also be eligible for our 50% off Wilson racquet offer. To request this, tick the relevant box on the online enrolment form, or email info@matchpoint.net.au to enquire.

If you are unsure, contact us before purchasing so you do not accidentally buy a racquet better suited to a medieval jousting tournament.

What is Hot Shots tennis?

Hot Shots Tennis is a Tennis Australia program that Matchpoint proudly supports through our junior pathway. It uses modified courts, age-appropriate racquets and lower-compression balls to make tennis easier and more enjoyable for children as they learn.

Players progress through colour ball stages as they build coordination, rally skills, serving, scoring and matchplay confidence.

You can learn more about the national program on the official Tennis Australia Hot Shots Tennis page.

Do you offer junior matchplay or fixtures?

Yes. Matchpoint offers junior matchplay and competition pathways for players who are ready to learn scoring, tactics and match confidence. This may include internal matchplay, fixtures, squads and external competition opportunities.

Visit our Match Play & Fixtures page for more information.

Venue Procedures

Venue-Specific Lesson Procedures

Helpful drop-off, pick-up and supervision information for selected school-based tennis programs.

Are pets allowed at Matchpoint venues?

No. Pets, including dogs, are not permitted at Matchpoint venues.

Many of our programs operate on school grounds, so families and spectators must follow venue and school site rules. Please do not bring pets onto site when attending lessons, court hire, events or matchplay.

Living Faith lessons: where do students go before and after tennis?

Morning Lessons

Drop-off to tennis: Parents are to drop players directly to the tennis court before the lesson starts.

Students who are attending before school care will be walked over to the tennis courts by the extra-curricular staff. Please let school care staff know that your child has a tennis lesson on that morning.

After tennis: Students will collect their belongings and head to school themselves.

Afternoon Lessons

Drop-off to tennis: Students will make their own way over to the tennis courts once the school bell has rung.

If a student is attending after school care, extra-curricular staff will walk them over to the courts.

Pick-up from tennis: Parents are to pick up students at the completion of the lesson.

Extra-curricular staff will collect any students who are attending after school care after their lesson and escort them to after school care.

The Lakes College afternoon Hot Shots lessons: where do students go before and after tennis?

Before Tennis

Students meet the extra-curricular school staff at the undercover area. A Matchpoint coach will then meet the students and walk them down to the court before the lesson starts.

After Tennis

Students are to be picked up strictly at the lesson end time. To reduce coaches being delayed getting to their next lessons, parents must collect their child within 5 minutes of the lesson ending. If parents are late, a nominated late fee invoice may be sent.

College Care

Coaches will walk children who are attending College Care over after the lesson is complete. If your child is attending College Care, please ask them to remain at the back of the tennis court after their lesson so the coach can walk them over.

Kelvin Grove afternoon Hot Shots: where do students meet?

Drop-off to tennis: Students meet the coaching team outside the Junior School office, where the class rolls are marked.

Students are then walked over to the courts by the Matchpoint coaching staff.

Adult Programs

Adult Tennis & Pickleball FAQs

For adults starting, returning or looking for a more social way to play.

What adult programs do you offer?

Matchpoint offers adult coaching, social tennis, cardio-style sessions, fixtures, pickleball and private lessons. Options may vary by venue and term.

Visit our Adult Programs page for current options.

Can adults join if they are nervous or haven’t played in years?

Visit our Match Play & Fixtures page for more information.

Are private lessons available for beginners?

Do you offer semi-private lessons?

Yes. Semi-private lessons are usually for two players and can be a great option for siblings, friends or players of a similar level who want more individual support than a group class.
